Aleksander Barkov has once again claimed the Selke Trophy as the NHL’s top defensive forward, marking the second consecutive year and the third time in his career that he has received this honor. The Florida Panthers’ captain was a strong contender for the award this season, but his victory was also influenced by a touching moment involving a young patient at the Geordy Maggio Children’s Hospital. During his time in Florida, Barkov frequently visited the hospital, though his appearances were limited due to the Panthers’ run in the Stanley Cup Finals. Instead, the children made special visits to the Panthers’ facility. To celebrate Barkov’s achievement in winning both the 2025 Selke Trophy and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy—awarded annually to players demonstrating exceptional leadership on and off the ice and significant humanitarian contributions—children from the hospital surprised him during a team meeting.

Barkov seems on track to establish a lasting legacy with the Selke Trophy, joining the ranks of former Bruins star Patrice Bergeron. Florida boasts one of the strongest defensive units in the NHL, with Barkov playing a central role. According to Natural Stat Trick, Barkov posted a plus-13 target difference and a 58.4% expected goals rate at 5-on-5 play, consistently facing the toughest opponents. He uniquely excels at shutting down elite competition.

In the upcoming Stanley Cup Finals against the Edmonton Oilers, Barkov will be Florida’s key defensive asset. Few teams have players capable of effectively countering or slowing down stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, but Barkov is up to the challenge, promising an exciting and intense showdown in the weeks to come.

Fan Take: Barkov’s continued excellence as a defensive forward highlights the importance of all-around skill and leadership in today’s NHL, not just offensive talent. His impact on and off the ice embodies the evolving role of star players and sets a powerful example for future generations in hockey.
