WNBA to Deliver a Powerful Statement to Sabrina Ionescu’s Liberty Coach This Wednesday

The WNBA is set to make a strong statement to Sabrina Ionescu’s Liberty coach this Wednesday. After securing their first-ever WNBA championship last season, the New York Liberty has carried impressive momentum into June.

The Liberty kicked off the 2025 season with six straight wins in May and extended their unbeaten record to 7-0 following a dominant 100-52 home win against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. Throughout these games, New York has averaged 91.9 points per game while shooting 48.6% from the field, both of which lead the league.

Driving the Liberty’s success is head coach Sandi Brondello, who orchestrated one of the franchise’s most powerful season starts. The WNBA recognized Brondello’s impact on Wednesday by naming her Coach of the Month for May, highlighting the Liberty’s perfect 6-0 record during that span.

Brondello previously led the Phoenix Mercury to a record 29-5 regular season in 2014, winning the WNBA Championship and earning Coach of the Year honors. After eight seasons with Phoenix, she joined New York in January 2022. Under her guidance, the Liberty secured consecutive conference titles in 2023 and 2024 and captured their first WNBA Championship in 2024.

While Brondello is the architect of the team’s strategy, Sabrina Ionescu is the powerhouse driving their success. The No. 1 overall pick from Oregon’s 2020 draft arrived in New York with high expectations—and has exceeded them. Over the past five years, Ionescu has earned three All-Star selections (2022-24) and was named to the All-WNBA Second Team during the same period.

In the first seven games of 2025, Ionescu has continued her strong performance, averaging 28.9 minutes per game with 17.9 points, 4.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.1 steals.

Fan Take: This strong start for the Liberty underlines the rising talent and strategy in the WNBA, making the league more thrilling for fans. The continued excellence of stars like Ionescu and coaches like Brondello is a sign of the WNBA’s bright future and growing competitiveness.
