The Washington Mystics began the 2025 WNBA season with a strong 2-0 record but have struggled recently, now standing at 3-5. On Thursday, they are set to face the reigning champions, the New York Liberty, seeking revenge after their 85-63 loss last Friday. The Liberty remain undefeated this season at 7-0, making them a formidable opponent, but the Mystics are eager to secure their fourth win.

Led by guard Britney Sykes, the Mystics have shown significant progress in their third year as a franchise. For the first time in her career, Sykes is averaging over 20 points per game, specifically 21.4 points, along with 4.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists across seven games. In their first matchup against the Liberty, she made history by becoming the 42nd fastest player in the league to reach 3,000 career points. Sykes expressed gratitude for the franchise’s confidence in making her a key player, saying, “To be able to reach that type of milestone is just a blessing and I’m grateful to have reached this point in DC.”

This season, Sykes has scored at least 20 points in five games, including a standout performance with 30 points, five rebounds, and three assists in the third game. If she continues this level of high performance, she is likely to earn the Most Improved Player award. Beyond her scoring, Sykes has earned two steals titles and was named to the All-Rookie team in 2017, alongside notable players such as Allisha Gray and Kelsey Plum.

Her continued development not only boosts the Mystics’ prospects but also showcases the evolving talent elevating the sport’s profile and popularity.
