Every summer, the reveal of Madden’s cover athletes generates significant excitement, sparking debates about who players will embody in the game. This anticipation lasts through the summer until the game’s launch, followed closely by the start of the NFL regular season and real football games.

This year, Saquon Barkley was chosen as the cover athlete. He is a Super Bowl champion and a recent member of the exclusive 2,000-yard single-season rushing club.

Being selected for the Madden cover is a major accomplishment, reserved for only the top NFL talents. Occasionally, even the greatest players in history grace the cover, like Barry Sanders did in 2014. Since its debut in the late 1980s, Madden has released annually on Steam, featuring numerous football legends on its cover. So, who ranks as the greatest Madden cover athlete ever?

With that question, Fox Sports Research created a list of the top 10 Madden cover athletes leading up to the game’s 2026 edition.

Top 10 Madden Cover Athletes:

10. John Madden (1988-2000, 2023)
The only coach on this list and the one who inspired the game’s name, John Madden was a legendary coach and broadcaster. His insights helped introduce football to fans of all ages. A Hall of Fame coach, Madden won 10 games in five of seven seasons and led the Raiders to their only Super Bowl victory in 1976.

9. Brett Favre (2009)
A true gunslinger, Favre started for 20 seasons and won three consecutive MVP awards from 1995-1997. He ranks fourth all-time in passing yards (71,838) and touchdowns (508), while winning the 1996 Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers.

6. Marshall Faulk (2003)
Faulk’s versatile skills helped him lead one of football’s best offenses. His cover season in 2001 saw over 1,300 rushing yards for four consecutive seasons, finishing top-two in MVP voting three years straight including a 2000 MVP win.

5. Rob Gronkowski (year not specified)
