In Edmonton, the Florida Panthers faced a heartbreaking defeat while the Edmonton Oilers celebrated a thrilling victory as Leon Draisaitl scored the overtime winner on a power play, assisted by Conor McDavid. The Panthers were attempting to kill a penalty when Draisaitl netted the decisive goal with just 31 seconds remaining, giving the Oilers an early lead in the Stanley Cup final series.

“I’m just the one who scored, but the groundwork was all there,” Draisaitl said post-game. “McDavid made a fantastic play and pass, and I was lucky to finish it off. There were many great plays leading up to that moment.”

The Oilers got off to a flying start when Draisaitl quickly capitalized on a rebound from goalie Sergei Bobrovsky to put Edmonton ahead 1-0. McDavid nearly doubled the lead, hitting the post on a breakaway, but the momentum shifted quickly as the Panthers fought back.

Florida tied the game midway through the first period when Carter Verhaeghe scored after a setup from Sam Bennett. The Oilers challenged the goal due to goalie interference, but officials ruled that Brett Kulak had pushed Bennett, and the play stood. The Panthers then earned a power play from Edmonton’s failed challenge, which Brad Marchand converted with a simple goal at the net.

Following a series of power plays for both teams and some controversial officiating, Aaron Ekblad scored again for Florida after restraining Draisaitl. The Panthers continued their fast start by exploiting a defensive misstep, leading to a beautiful assist from Nate Schmidt for another Panthers goal. However, Edmonton responded quickly with a slap shot goal from a pass by Victor Arvidsson.

After the initial flurry of scoring, both goalies raised their game in the middle period. Bobrovsky denied clear chances by Jake Walman, Trent Frederic, and Evan Bouchard, while Oilers’ goalie Stuart Skinner kept the team alive with key saves on Alexander Barkov and Schmidt. “He gave us a chance to win, which is what you want from your goalie,” said McDavid, praising Skinner’s clutch performance.

In the third period, Edmonton continued their pressure, with McDavid setting up Matthias Ekholm to score, putting the Oilers ahead as McDavid dazzled with the puck. Edmonton dominated much of the period with a 14-2 shot count, but the score remained tied, pushing the game into overtime.

In overtime, Kasperi Kapanen had a great chance for Florida, splitting the defense but hitting the post, exciting the crowd. Then, under two minutes in, Thomas Nosek was penalized for a pack-over-the-glass infraction. Edmonton capitalized on the ensuing power play, with Draisaitl scoring the winning goal to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead in the series.

Both Draisaitl and McDavid finished the night with two points each. “Since joining the team, they’ve been our most consistent players,” said Brett Kulak about Draisaitl and McDavid. “They elevate their game on the biggest stages.”

Game 2 is scheduled for Friday at 8 pm in Edmonton. Fans can follow updates on Google News Hockey News or subscribe to the hockey newsletter.
