Bubba Wallace will start third in the Daytona 500 on Sunday after winning his first duel qualifying race, finishing ahead of William Byron and Ty Dillon. Wallace showcased a fast car throughout the race and led the final lap to secure the victory. After the race, he expressed relief and pride in earning a duel win, something he had been aiming for as many of his peers had already achieved it.

Justin Allgaier qualified ninth for the race, driving for Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s JR Motorsports, marking the first time a car owned by this team has competed in a NASCAR Cup Series race. Wallace is also a favorite to win the Daytona 500, with impressive previous performances at Daytona, including top-five finishes in two of the last three years.

Chase Brisco earned the pole position in Wednesday’s qualifying but may have to forfeit his top spot if his team decides to switch to a backup car due to safety concerns. Helio Castroneves will join the race as the 41st car under NASCAR’s interim rules after a crash involving several drivers, including Chandler Smith and Justin Haley.

Full-time teams automatically qualify under NASCAR’s Charter Rule 36, leaving a few open spots to be filled based on qualifying speeds and duel race results. Martin Truex Jr. and Jimmie Johnson secured two of these spots.

Austin Cindric won the second duel race in a thrilling finish, narrowly beating Erik Jones after a late caution shuffled the order. Cindric secured the second starting position for the Daytona 500, while Jones will start fourth. Corey LaJoie was the fastest open driver, clinching the final spot in the race.
