The Socceroos secured their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a stunning goal from Aziz Behich, clinching a 1-0 victory over Japan at the sold-out Optus Stadium.

Before a crowd of 57,226 on Thursday night, Australia struggled for much of the match but managed to score with Behich’s first international goal in 13 years.

After an angled pass from Riley McCree was stopped in the box, Behich executed a right-footed strike that soared into the net.

Coach Tony Popovich erupted with joy on the sidelines during the goal, even celebrating with the fans.

This victory assures the Socceroos (16 points, +8 goal difference) secure the second automatic qualification spot from their group.

Saudi Arabia (10 points, -2 goal difference) must defeat Bahrain to stay competitive with the Socceroos. This match marked Australia’s first win over Japan since 2009.

Japan (20 points), having already qualified for the World Cup as group leaders, did not feel pressure during the match. They rested several regulars, including Kaoru Mitoma and Takumi Minamino, while fielding three debutants in their starting lineup and six players with fewer than four caps.

Australia seemed intimidated in the first half, plagued by basic mistakes and poor choices, while Japan dominated possession at 70%. In the 28th minute, Yukiishi Suzuki nearly scored, narrowly missing the goal.

A goalkeeping blunder by Japan in the 48th minute gave Behich a chance to capitalize, and in the 90th minute, he happily converted, igniting the crowd’s excitement.

This news is significant for soccer fans as it highlights Australia’s rising momentum on the international stage just as the World Cup approaches. It signals that the Socceroos are capable of competing against top teams, stirring excitement and hope for their prospects in the tournament.
