Four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers inks one-year contract, joining the Pittsburgh Steelers

After much deliberation over several weeks, Aaron Rodgers has decided on his next NFL destination. The four-time NFL MVP has agreed to a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to sources cited by CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones. Rodgers will join the Steelers’ mandatory mini-camp scheduled for next week.

The Steelers were among three teams seriously considering Rodgers, alongside the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings. However, the Giants opted for Jamis Winston and Russell Wilson, while the Vikings moved forward with JJ McCarthy, their 2024 first-round pick who unfortunately missed his entire rookie season due to injury.

Pittsburgh initially aimed to re-sign either Wilson or Justin Fields before free agency but was unsuccessful with both. The Steelers are now focused on reviving Mason Rudolph’s role and pursuing a veteran quarterback path for another season, having also drafted Ohio State QB Will Howard in the seventh round.

Rodgers comes off two years with the New York Jets, concluding the worst performance season of his Hall of Fame career, with declines in win rate, attempts, and passer rating. In 2024, he threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, marking his place as the fifth quarterback in NFL history to surpass 500 career touchdown passes.

While the Steelers feel reassured in their quarterback decision, the signing of Rodgers has sparked mixed reactions in Pittsburgh. Critics point to Rodgers’ history of missed seasons, and Steelers safety Decon Elliott even commented on social media about betting-related fan opinions suggesting Rodgers should retire instead.

The Steelers are eager to strengthen an offense that struggled to find consistency in 2024. They made a notable move by acquiring former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf, who signed a five-year, $150 million contract, now pairing with Rodgers at quarterback.

If Rodgers leads Pittsburgh to another Super Bowl victory, he would join Peyton Manning and Tom Brady as the only quarterbacks with three or more MVP awards and two Super Bowls, cementing his status among the top five quarterbacks in NFL history. This partnership also offers Rodgers a chance to rehabilitate his legacy after a difficult season led to major Jets staff changes.

However, at 42 years old and recovering from injuries that have affected his mobility, Rodgers’ comeback is high-risk. The Steelers hope his leadership, absent since Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement, will stabilize their offense. Rodgers will have a strong offensive line and weapons like Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, and tight end Pat Freiermuth to support him.

Pittsburgh’s defense has strengthened with additions like Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay and first-round draft pick Derrick Harmon. Meanwhile, Rodgers’ upcoming schedule includes intense matchups against his former teams—the Jets in Week 1 and the Packers in Week 8—adding extra drama to his “revenge tour.”

DK Metcalf stands to benefit greatly from this union, becoming Rodgers’ clear number one target with minimal competition in the wide receiver lineup. Conversely, Kirk Cousins faces uncertainty as the Steelers choose Rodgers over pursuing him further.

This signing is a pivotal moment for the Steelers, signaling their ambition to return to playoff prominence and for Rodgers, a chance to extend his NFL legacy under the spotlight once again.

Fan Take: Rodgers joining the Steelers brings a thrilling mix of high risk and high reward for NFL fans, injecting renewed excitement into the league’s quarterback dynamics. This move could redefine the Steelers’ offensive strategy and reinvigorate Rodgers’ career, making the 2025 season a must-watch for football enthusiasts.
