Louis Sanger Acuña is a 23-year-old infielder for the New York Mets, originally from Venezuela and the younger brother of Ronald Acuña Jr., an emerging star for the Atlanta Braves and the National League Rookie of the Month in April. Once one of the top prospects for the Texas Rangers, Luisangel was traded to the Mets in July 2023 in exchange for Max Scherzer. Recently, before the Acuña brothers got the chance to face off on the field for the first time, Luisangel spoke during a trip to Los Angeles through an interpreter, sharing insights about his personality, family life, and baseball journey.

Luisangel describes himself as a happy, determined, and humble person who tirelessly pursues his dreams. Outside of baseball, he enjoys spending time with his family at the rivers near their Venezuelan coast, often enjoying barbecues. He misses traditional Venezuelan fish dishes, which differ from the common salmon eaten in the U.S., and considers his grandmother the best cook in the family. Despite the distance, he stays connected to his roots through Latin restaurants in New York.

Winning the National League Rookie of the Month was a proud moment for Ronald, with Luisangel receiving his congratulations over the phone. The brothers maintain a close, friendly rivalry, especially when training together in Venezuela. Ronald often encourages Luisangel to be consistent and disciplined. Their competitions, like who gets the most hits, end in playful bets such as paying for dinner. While Ronald is the better basketball player due to his height, Luisangel claims to be faster.

Ronald sustained an injury last September but is now set to face Luisangel’s Mets when they visit the Braves in June—a game both brothers eagerly anticipate. Ronald even mentioned the upcoming Mets’ visit before fully recovering, showing how excited he is about the matchup.

Fan Take: This story highlights the exciting emergence of the Acuña brothers as rising stars in MLB, adding a compelling family narrative to the sport’s drama. Their friendly competition and shared journey could inspire fans and bring renewed energy to baseball, especially as they face each other on the field soon.
