Rose Lavelle, a standout from the Women’s World Cup, has made her return after recovering from an ankle injury, offering a timely boost for both NJ/NY Gotham FC in the NWSL and the U.S. Women’s National Team.

Since her last appearance in December during a 2-1 win over the Netherlands, Lavelle underwent surgery on her ankle and has been sidelined for around six months. Her comeback could happen this Saturday when Gotham hosts Kansas City Current at 1 PM ET (CBS). “I hope everything goes well,” said coach Juan Carlos Amoros at a pre-game press conference on Thursday.

Lavelle’s presence is crucial as Gotham faces The Current, who are leading the NWSL with eight wins out of their first ten games. Currently positioned ninth, Gotham is in need of her skills, despite having recently won the inaugural Concacaf W Champions Cup by defeating Tigress 1-0 last month.

The Role of Lavelle in Gotham’s Season

Gotham sits just two points from a playoff spot, a manageable deficit with 16 games remaining. Therefore, Lavelle’s timing couldn’t be better, especially as her return coincides with the team’s efforts to improve offensively this season.

The reigning NWSL champions have had a mixed start, with Lavelle’s team averaging only 12 goals in 10 matches, ranking eighth in the league. Statistical indicators point to similar trends, with Gotham sixth in the league for both goals (120) and shots on target (45). They’ve registered 10 goals thus far, reflecting patterns seen in previous seasons under Amoros.

Last season, Gotham also faced a slow start but eventually finished third, reaching the playoff semifinals. The team demonstrated solid defense but struggled offensively initially. Lavelle’s return from a lower limb injury in April positively affected their performance. She scored eight goals and provided one assist in 23 matches, becoming one of the top players alongside Gonzalez. Another strong season for her could significantly impact Gotham’s performance.

Lavelle’s Experience for USWNT

As USWNT head coach Emma Hayes prepares for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, she is strategically incorporating young talents while ensuring veteran players like Lavelle are part of the mix. Defender Crystal Dunn highlighted the importance of veterans, noting how challenging it is to maintain top form.

Lavelle brings invaluable experience, having participated in two World Cups and Olympics, clinching first place in both events. Her on-field contributions have made her a vital player in the USWNT midfield over the years, helping the team with its well-regarded offensive strategies. Though it’s uncertain when she’ll rejoin the national team, her return will certainly bolster their capabilities as they navigate this transition.

Hayes aims to finalize her player list by the next international window in early July, allowing her some time to experiment with her lineup. The head coach has primarily been using Lindsey Heap and Lily Johanne in midfield, so Lavelle’s comeback will provide her additional options to find the best combinations for 2027.

Fan Take: Lavelle’s return not only reinvigorates Gotham’s offense but also enhances the USWNT’s depth heading into the 2027 World Cup cycle. Her experience could prove pivotal for both club and country, setting the stage for an exciting season in women’s soccer.
