Adam Silver Looks to Propel NBA Expansion Forward This Summer

The NBA expansion has been simmering like a pot of water slowly heating on a rock, with the excitement tempered but not extinguished. Everyone understands that eventually, the heat will rise, the water will boil, and significant action will take place—but for now, things have remained steady and warm.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently expressed optimism about the league’s expansion during a press session before Game 1 of the NBA Finals. When asked about the owners’ stance on expansion, Silver acknowledged the current openness to exploring the idea, but stressed that it is not a foregone conclusion. He noted that expanding the league involves different viewpoints on its future, and while adding new teams could promote fairness, it isn’t automatic.

Silver mentioned that the upcoming owners’ meeting in Las Vegas this July will keep expansion discussions active. There is already a committee in place, and Silver sees this meeting as an opportunity to delve deeper into the subject. He hopes that if expansion is pursued, the process will become more formal, with the league office and a committee of team owners conducting a thorough investigation.

Although Silver has received many unsolicited inquiries from potential ownership groups in various cities, he has refrained from engaging with them to remain fair. Should the league proceed to a formal exploratory phase, meetings with interested parties and external advisors—who will assess market conditions, economic prospects, and media opportunities—will begin.

The prevailing hope within the league circles is to add two new teams, possibly in Seattle and Las Vegas. The preferred timing hinges on the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) coming into effect, ensuring stability, along with the finalization of new television contracts—both of which are now underway. Additionally, the sale of high-value franchises such as the Boston Celtics, valued at $6 billion, and the ongoing sale process of the Portland Trail Blazers, will help determine expansion fees, giving the league a clearer financial picture.

This summer’s meeting in Las Vegas is expected to stoke the flames and potentially bring the expansion plans to a boiling point.

Fan Take: For basketball fans, NBA expansion represents exciting growth that could bring new markets, fresh rivalries, and increased talent to the league. It signals a new era of opportunity and evolution that could reshape the NBA’s future on and off the court.
