Cavaliers’ Jordan Otto Becomes Suns’ Third Head Coach in Just Three Years as Assistant Steps Up

The Phoenix Suns have appointed Jordan Ott, previously an assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers, as their new head coach, according to an announcement made on Friday. Ott, who joined the Cavs’ coaching staff last summer and contributed to their 64-win regular season, has experience with multiple teams including the Lakers, Nets, and served as a video coordinator for the Atlanta Hawks. Now under his leadership, the Suns will face numerous roster decisions next season, especially with ongoing trade rumors surrounding Kevin Durant.

While another Cavaliers assistant, Johnny Bryant, was also considered, the final decision received key support from Suns star Devin Booker, indicating a team strategy that focuses on building around the All-Star guard. However, how the rest of the roster shapes up remains a critical concern for Phoenix this offseason.

Regarding Kevin Durant, he was nearly traded at the February deadline but rejected a return to the Golden State Warriors, expressing no interest to teammate Stephen Curry. Recent rumors link Durant to potential trades involving the Spurs and Timberwolves, though it remains uncertain if these moves will materialize this summer. The Suns had previously placed a high trade value on Durant, considering the assets given for him, but now seem willing to lower that asking price to facilitate a trade due to his hefty contract extending through 2026.

It’s unclear what the Suns hope to get in return for Durant, but with Booker’s input in the coaching selection, it’s evident Phoenix aims to remodel rather than completely rebuild. Ott inherits a team eager to compete for a playoff spot, especially after the departures of previous coaches Mike Budenholzer, Frank Vogel, and Monty Williams. Ott holds a Master’s degree from Michigan and previously worked as a video coordinator under Tom Izzo, with a connection to Suns owner Mat Ishbia, also a Michigan alum, likely securing Ott’s position for at least a couple of years.

Fan Take: Jordan Ott’s hiring signals a fresh direction for the Suns, balancing continuity with bold roster moves, notably involving Kevin Durant. This shift could reshape the competitive landscape of the NBA, making it a pivotal offseason for fans eager to see how Phoenix rebuilds around Booker and navigates Durant’s future.
