Draymond Green Claims He Outmaneuvered Warriors Owners with a “Finish Line” Trade, Often Mistaken for Luka Doncic’s Deal

Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green shared an interesting story about how he initially misunderstood the news of Luka Doncic’s trade. The trade, which sent Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers, was a major shake-up in the NBA and caught everyone’s attention, including that of Shams Charania, the reporter who broke the news and admitted to being nervous.

Shortly after, the Warriors made their own move by trading Jimmy Butler, although it was nearly another player who ended up joining the team. The February trade deadline was particularly eventful, with Kevin Durant being a significant figure despite not moving immediately. The Phoenix Suns aimed to acquire Butler by attempting to trade Bradley Beal, but Beal’s no-trade clause and desire to stay complicated the situation. This led the Suns to explore bringing Kevin Durant back to the Warriors.

Draymond Green revealed on Jimmy Kimmel’s show that Warriors owner Joe Lacob had told him they were very close to finalizing Durant’s return. Green described how Lacob was excited and confident that the deal was on the verge of completion, which caused confusion when Doncic’s trade news broke simultaneously. After hearing the news, Green and teammate Steph Curry initially thought Durant’s trade had been completed and publicized, leading to some chaotic moments during a Warriors charity poker event.

By early March, reports confirmed that the Warriors had agreed to Durant’s trade terms, but the move ultimately fell through as Durant refused to rejoin Golden State. Durant later explained on a podcast with Green that his decision was to avoid the turmoil of a midseason trade. Meanwhile, the Warriors pushed forward with the Jimmy Butler trade and made it to the Western Conference semifinals, although that may now limit their chances of acquiring Durant in the upcoming summer.

Durant is expected to leave the Suns, with reports suggesting a 98% chance he will move on, though his future destination remains uncertain. Several teams are linked to Durant, but the Suns appear focused on retaining valuable assets. This ongoing drama around Durant highlights the complexity and unpredictability of NBA trades.

Fan Take: This insider glimpse into the trade saga highlights how quickly deals can evolve and unravel, showing the human side of NBA management and player decisions. For basketball fans, it underscores the high stakes and emotional rollercoaster behind the scenes, which can ultimately shape the league’s competitive landscape in unexpected ways.
