The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially signed Aaron Rodgers, finalizing their quarterback situation after months of speculation. Although Rodgers wasn’t their initial or second choice, the Steelers had initially aimed to trade for Los Angeles Rams’ Matthew Stafford or re-sign Justin Fields before settling on Rodgers, according to ESPN.

Stafford was available early in the offseason and attracted interest from teams like the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders. The Rams allowed him to seek a contract extension elsewhere, but he ultimately stayed with Los Angeles. Fields, 26, played the full 2024 season with the Steelers, starting six games and posting a 4-2 record when veteran Russell Wilson was sidelined due to a calf injury. Despite a solid performance with 1,106 passing yards, five touchdowns, and added rushing stats, Fields was benched upon Wilson’s return. Although the Steelers wanted to keep Fields, the New York Jets signed him to a two-year, $40 million deal during the NFL’s legal tampering window.

The Jets signing Fields came shortly after releasing Rodgers, who had a tough two-year run with the team due to an Achilles injury that caused him to miss most of the 2023 season. Rodgers still managed respectable stats in 2024 with 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and a 90.5 passer rating, but the Jets only won five games.

While Rodgers couldn’t lead the Jets to the playoffs, the Steelers hope he can guide them to a third consecutive postseason appearance. The team has revamped its offense, bringing in wide receivers DK Metcalf and trading George Pickens, while retaining running back Najee Harris and adding new talent like Caleb Johnson. The Steelers may continue enhancing their offense by potentially adding more skill position players such as Miami Dolphins’ tight end Johnne Smith or veteran wide receiver Gabe Davis.

Rodgers has reportedly reached out to Coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith to tailor the offense to his strengths, indicating a commitment to making the partnership successful despite being the third choice for the Steelers.

Fan Take: This signing is a bold move for the Steelers, signaling their determination to solidify their quarterback position and make a serious playoff push. NFL fans should watch closely as Rodgers’ experience paired with the revamped offensive lineup could bring exciting and competitive football to Pittsburgh.
