WNBA’s “Line” Program Scores Big, Making Waves in the Banking Game with Three-Point Precision

Color often serves as a powerful cultural symbol that stirs deep emotions. For the WNBA, its distinctive orange hue goes beyond just a color—it embodies the spirit and messaging of the 29-year-old professional league. The phrase “If you can see her, you’ll become her,” highlighted in this vivid orange, extends its influence beyond the court. On June 9th, the WNBA introduced “Line ‘Em Up,” a nationwide campaign aiming to paint the official WNBA 3-point line on outdoor basketball courts across the country. This initiative hopes to create welcoming, designated spaces for female athletes in the most accessible basketball venues: public courts.

Phil Cook, the league’s chief marketing officer, told USA Today, “When a young girl steps onto a court and sees the WNBA Orange three-point line, they see themselves represented in a community space that wasn’t always inclusive.” The campaign’s concept grew from the idea of marking every outdoor basketball court with the WNBA’s three-point line, encouraging young players to envision themselves as future stars.

Players like Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Kayla McBride, and DeWanna Bonner, who rank among the top three-point shooters in WNBA history, paved the way for today’s athletes such as Jewel Lloyd, Kate Linklark, and Sabrina Ionsk. Their dedication built the foundation for the league’s current and future talent.

While similar initiatives exist, such as MLS’s mini pitches and the NFL’s “play football” program, the WNBA’s campaign stands out for its simple yet powerful representation. Cook explains, “What makes us unique is this straightforward action that upgrades the space by signifying a league often overlooked in these public areas. Dropping that orange line brings the identity of the WNBA into the community, encouraging participation and trust.”

Bringing professional women’s basketball imagery closer to neighborhoods and parks enhances visibility and fosters a deeper connection between the league and the community. Cook shared a memorable moment when he saw a young athlete chalking the driveway with the orange line symbolizing the three-point mark.

Fan Take: This campaign is a game-changer for WNBA fans, as it physically marks public spaces with the pride and presence of women’s professional basketball. It not only inspires young female players but also solidifies the WNBA’s impact on the sport’s future, promoting inclusion and empowerment at the grassroots level.
