George Russell Teases Mercedes’ Next Moves Amid Aston Martin Connections

George Russell has strongly hinted that he will remain a Mercedes Formula 1 driver for the next season. Despite being the most talked-about F1 driver without a confirmed deal for 2026, and not having signed a new contract yet, Russell’s impressive performance early in the 2025 season keeps the speculation alive.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has suggested that a new agreement with Russell is forthcoming and dismissed rumors about trying to recruit Verstappen to Mercedes. Nevertheless, speculation about Russell’s future persists until an official contract is signed. Aston Martin claims Russell has shown interest in winning three Grand Prix races.

In a recent interview with Motorsport-Total, Russell hinted he is likely to stay with Mercedes next year but remained non-committal. When asked whether he was certain about his decision, Russell said, “No, nothing is guaranteed. But if I stay with Mercedes, next year will mark my fifth season with the team. Only time will tell what happens.”

Toto Wolff indicated that signing a new deal with Russell is just a formality and expected to be completed before the summer break in August. When asked if the contract would be confirmed by the end of summer, Wolff replied, “No, it won’t take that long,” adding that both he and Russell are fully aligned on the process and have no intention of delaying it.

Mercedes’ Chief Communications Officer, Bradley Road, recently told Sky Sports F1 that there is no rush, as Russell is focused on his current performance during the triple header races. He confirmed that discussions will happen at the right time and won’t take long, expecting a contract to be finalized in the coming weeks or months.

Fan Take: This news is crucial for racing fans because securing Russell’s future with Mercedes preserves stability within one of F1’s top teams while maintaining intense competition. It signals that the battle for the championship remains fierce, with key drivers staying put, promising thrilling seasons ahead.
