Rays’ Shortstop Wander Franco Faces Sexual Abuse Trial Amid Gun Possession Charges

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco was charged with illegal firearm possession on Sunday while he is still undergoing trial for sexual abuse, according to various reports. The firearm issue stems from a November dispute that resulted in Franco’s arrest. The 24-year-old was detained following a confrontation with another man, during which police recovered two guns—one of which was found in Franco’s vehicle.

The firearm, a semi-automatic Glock 19, is reportedly registered to Franco’s uncle. Franco’s attorney, Antonio Garcia Lorenzo, stated that the gun’s ownership is legal, as it is properly licensed.

Franco is currently facing trial in the Dominican Republic on allegations involving the sexual and commercial exploitation of minors. He is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl and allegedly paid thousands to the girl’s mother to facilitate this. The mother has also been charged with sexual abuse and money laundering involving a minor.

Once viewed as a top prospect in the minors, Franco was having a breakout MLB season in 2023 before allegations of inappropriate conduct with minors emerged. The Rays placed him on a restricted list in August while MLB investigated. Subsequently, MLB put Franco on administrative leave under its policies addressing domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse, and he has not played in any MLB games since.

The MLB investigation continues alongside the Dominican trial. Franco, who signed an 11-year, $182 million deal with the Rays in 2021, faces up to 30 years in prison if found guilty.

Fan Take: This news is deeply troubling for baseball fans who had high hopes for Franco’s promising career. It also highlights the importance of MLB’s strict policies on player conduct off the field, which are crucial for maintaining the sport’s integrity and protecting its young fans.
