Maverick Vinales set a new official lap record at Aragon during the MotoGP test, outperforming top riders Marco Bezzecchi and Marc Marquez. Despite crashing at the recent Grand Prix, the Tech3 KTM rider made a strong comeback by testing new aerodynamic features, an updated engine setup, and the latest mass damper on the RC16 bike.

Aerodynamics are clearly a major focus for the factory, with several options available for five riders, including test rider Pol Espargaro. Vinales emphasized their hard work to improve the bike’s cornering ability and praised the teamwork, saying it was crucial to maintain and advance their performance.

Regarding the new fairing, Vinales noted it slightly reduced braking power but improved turning when accelerating through corners, allowing the bike to better manage traction. He also tested KTM’s newest “salad box” to house Ducati’s mass dampers, which help reduce vibrations and chatter, offering a significant improvement if it works correctly. However, Vinales pointed out the challenge of maintaining consistent performance in hot conditions.

Pedro Acosta was the next fastest KTM rider, ranking fifth overall, with Brad Binder in 13th, and Vinales’ teammates Enea Bastianini and Pol Espargaro placing 16th and 19th respectively. KTM Technical Director Sebastian Lis highlighted their focus on aero and chassis components across all four MotoGP riders, noting positive results but emphasizing the need for further data analysis to optimize performance quickly.

The Italian Grand Prix at Mugello, where KTM has recorded the highest top speeds, is scheduled for June 20-22.

Fan Take: This breakthrough by Vinales and KTM on aerodynamics and mass damper technology could redefine bike performance standards in MotoGP, making races even more competitive. For racing fans, it signals a thrilling evolution in engineering that might shake up the current hierarchy in upcoming Grand Prix events.
