In Gold Coast, Australia, Jai Opetaia is set to face Mexican star Gilberto Ramirez in a cruiserweight unification bout. The 29-year-old Australian showcased dominance by overpowering Italian challenger Claudio Squeo at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on Sunday night, ultimately forcing referee Robert Hoyle to stop the fight after Opetaia broke Squeo’s jaw and knocked him down. Opetaia expressed eagerness to move on to bigger challenges, emphasizing his pursuit of unification bouts.

Despite Squeo being nearly 4 kilograms lighter and shorter, Opetaia skillfully assessed his opponent’s style before intensifying his attacks, using Squeo as his punching bag. This victory secured Opetaia’s defense of his IBF and The Ring World Cruiserweight titles and extended his undefeated streak to 28 fights, reinforcing his reputation in the cruiserweight division.

Opetaia has frequently voiced his ambition to fight Ramirez, who holds the WBO and WBA titles. Their highly anticipated clash is rumored to be part of the undercard for the September showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Terrence Crawford in Las Vegas, though nothing is officially confirmed. Opetaia remains confident the fight is achievable and is focused on capturing more belts.

Ramirez is scheduled to fight Uniel Dorticos in Anaheim later this month, but momentum for the Ramirez-Opetaia fight appears strong. Opetaia’s manager, Mick Francis, noted that fight discussions have been ongoing but stressed the importance of both sides agreeing to finalize the bout.

Fan Take: This unification fight could be a defining moment for the cruiserweight division, offering fans a high-stakes showdown between two top-tier fighters. It has the potential to elevate both athletes’ legacies and bring more attention to a division that often flies under the radar in the boxing world.
