Colts Announce Ownership Shift: Jim Ilsai Passes the Reins to His Daughter

The Indianapolis Colts have officially announced the new ownership structure following the passing of longtime owner Jim Irsay. As per Jim’s wishes, his three daughters have taken joint control of the team, each assuming distinct roles within the organization. Kali Irsay Gordon, the eldest, is now the owner and CEO, serving as the principal owner in compliance with NFL rules that mandate a single designated principal owner. Casey Foyte joins as owner and executive vice president, while the youngest sibling, Karen Jackson, is owner and chief brand officer, also leading the Indianapolis Colts Foundation as its president.

Jim Irsay passed away on May 21st at 65, having served as the principal owner since 1997 following his father’s death. The Irsay family has maintained ownership of the Colts since 1972, marking one of the longest-standing ownership legacies in the NFL. Each daughter has been actively involved with the franchise in various roles for years, with Kali Irsay Gordon particularly engaged in day-to-day operations and ownership committees. Jim encouraged his daughters to specialize in areas aligned with their interests, which is evident in how they now operate across different facets of the team, from game sidelines to draft meetings.

This transition appears to be smoother than the past shift from Bob Irsay to Jim Irsay, which involved legal disputes over succession. Jim Irsay had emphasized his commitment to keeping full ownership of the team and passing it on within the family, a promise he clearly communicated to his children.

Fan Take: This new era of Colts ownership symbolizes stability and continuity for one of the NFL’s most storied franchises. For fans and the league alike, it’s a hopeful sign that family-led teams can successfully evolve while preserving tradition and fostering new leadership.
