Phil Mickelson probably walks in silence as he’s the last of us open

OAKMONT, Pa. — Phil Mickelson, aka Lefty, aka Phil the Thrill, aka Phil the Thrill, aka 21st century, had more security guards than journalists in what could have been his last US open on Thursday. And there were two security guards.

Dressed in Hyflyers gear, he looks more trim than ever at the pinnacle of his popularity. Mickelson struggled in front of many of his Oakmont fellow competitors often played back nine. And like most of his fellow competitors, he walked through virtual silence from the gallery, occasionally walking just “Go Phil!” Separate the silence.

By this point, Mickelson’s fall has fallen from the good bounty of golf. Once the beloved of the golf world – Lascurry’s cheeky shade to Tiger Woods’ Steely Yang – Mickelson leads an attractive life, in and out of trouble on and off the golf course. He somehow radiated arrogant confidence while still being a hero to everyone.

However, after that, Saudi Arabia called, and Mickelson couldn’t resist the opportunity to stick to siren calls and PGA tours. Mickelson turns out to be right about the way the PGA Tour is needed to change, but on the ironic opportunism and how he made most of his former fans oppose him.

Mickelson and the US Open have a long, complicated history all have its own unique history. He finished second in six different places. This is an almost good missing line run that has been prevented from claiming a career grand slam. Mickelson hit the ball still moving towards a T48 finish with Frustration, where Mickelson hit a Shinnecock. He missed the cut in four of the last three consecutive five opens. And as of this year, it’s all from the exemption he won for winning the 2021 PGA Championship.

“I hope he makes his way, and I think he’ll tell you the same thing,” USGA Chief Championship Director John Bordenhamer said Wednesday. “That’s what he did last time. We gave him one. And he went out and won the PGA Championship.

It’s a rather tall order at this point that he expects a performance that qualifies him to play in another US Open. Mickelson won three top-10 finishes in seven LIV golf events this year. This included T4 in Virginia last week, where I spent time at the lead.

For a while on Thursday, momentum seemed to have been transmitted to Oakmont. He made even turns. However, his second nine-man bogey bogey double start effectively crushed his day, leaving an eight-stroke behind clubhouse leader JJ Spaun. Mickelson refuses to talk to the media after he’s finished, and will likely only have one more opportunity to perform before an open gallery in the US.

Thirty-one years ago, Arnold Palmer also said goodbye to the US Open at Oakmont. He walked the 18th hole to a wave of applause and tears. No matter how his career has flicked over the past few years, Mickelson will likely receive the same treatment. It’s a coda worthy of his career, but I can’t help but wonder what the reception would be like without the last few years of coloring his reputation.
