One of the world’s top men’s tennis players should not pass the first round of the 2025 French Open. Russian Danil Medvedev was knocked out of the event after a surprising upset by British Cameron Norry on Tuesday.

For Medvedev (formerly the No. 1 in the world), things looked shaky early in the match. Norri was able to shoot the first two sets (7-5, 6-3), and set himself in a good position to pull the upset apart.

However, Medvedev, the 11th species, had no intention of going out without a fight. He fought back in the match and the victory set a decisive fifth set with 3 and 4 (6-4, 6-1). After defeating Nolly 6-1 in the fourth set, Medvedev looked to his side for momentum towards the final set.

Early on, it seemed like a fact. Medvedev led Norrie 5-3 in that final set. But Nolly didn’t break. He fought to win the final four games, taking the match via Set and Medvedev.

Nolly was Nolly’s return to form, ranked 8th on the world list in 2022. Injuries drove the rankings in 2024, and with a second loss at the 2025 Australia Open, Norri entered the 2025 French Open as No. 81, and was not seeded in the tournament.

For Medvedev, the match was a huge disappointment. Despite notching 16 aces on one of Norrie, Medvedev registered 69 forced errors and 48 forced errors in loss.

Medvedev has appeared as one of the greatest male players in the past few years. He was ranked as high as the number one in the world in 2022. Medvedev has been playing well ever since. He was a finalist at the 2023 US Open and the 2024 Australia Open. His ranking fell to 11th place.

The 2025 French Open marks the second straight tournament in which Medvedev lost much earlier than expected. He was eliminated in the second round of the 2024 Australian Open by American learner Tien. Medvedev remained at No. 11, entering the 2025 French Open, although his loss in the first round could cause that ranking.

The victory will see Norri face Federico Agustin Gomez on Wednesday. Gomez advanced to the second round after beating American Alexander Kovasevic in four sets on Tuesday.
