The world’s third largest woman, American Jessica Pegra, was defeated by World No. 361 Royce Boisson on Monday in a shocking French open upset. Boisson electrified the local crowd as he made it to the quarterfinals, the only man or woman to reach the round this year.

Pegra won the first set of 6-3, and it felt like she was rolling Boisson. On that opening set, Boisson appeared to be struggling to keep up with Pegra’s pace and scrambling as Pegra decided on the shape of the match.

Boisson made major changes in the second set, mixing drop shots and lobs to turn the table, leaving Pegula as someone who had to hesitate in the attack. As Boisson gained momentum, Pegula missed the shot and began to produce uncharacteristic forced errors. Boisson gets a second set of 6-4.

Court Philippe-Chatrier went because in the third set, the majority of them were packed from the sky, shaking and agitating began to feel brewed. Boisson continued to confuse Pegula with her shot choices.

Pegra managed to compete 4-4 in the third set, but Boisson won the final two games, earning the biggest upset of the 2025 tournament so far.

Pegra is the best species ever lost at Roland Garros, but Boisson is the lowest woman to reach the major quarterfinals since 418 Kaia kanepi in 2017 and the first French wildcard to reach the French open quarterfinals since Mary Pierce in 2002.

Boisson was given a wild card spot at the 2024 French Open by the French Tennis Federation, but only had the ACL broken a week before the tournament. After sitting for nine months, Boisson returned to the court and got his second chance to play in a Grand Slam event.
