LONDON – French Open Surprise semi-finalist Royce Boson lost in the first round of Wimbledon qualifying.
Boisson, 22, was beaten 6-2, 6-7 (1), 6-4 on Tuesday, facing 197th-placed Canadian Carson Bransteen, playing an unusual match in French grass at the Roehampton Qualifier venue.
Boisson surged from 361 to 65 after running deep for Roland Garros in his Grand Slam main draw singles debut, and earned the top seed in the Wimbledon qualifying draw.
The denied wildcard to Wimbledon’s main draw sparked criticism in France of London’s tournament organizers.
Boisson defeated top 10 players Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva at the French Open, losing to ultimate champion Coco Gauff.
The main draw for Wimbledon begins on Monday.
