Detroit – Jake Knapp shot an 11-under 61, defeating Rocket Classic Records, which stood for less than a day, defeating the 60, becoming the first PGA Tour player to film under 61 in the same season.
Knapp started its second 130th with a 156 player field after opening at 72. He surged into competition on Friday with nine birdies and bogey free rounds.
“I probably only got upset all night, so I think I helped a little this morning,” he said.
Ranked 99th in the world, Knapp is the only player on the tour to film over 61 in two rounds this season.
He shot 59 from a 59-score record of 58 set by Jim Furic in 2016 – at Cognizant Classic four months ago, he broke the tournament scoring record and cooled off to tie him down to sixth place.
Knapp broke an 18-hole record at Detroit Golf Club, set Thursday in the first round when Aldrich Potgieter and Kevin Roy both shot 62.
“When I start making birdies, I want to make more,” Knap said. “When I locked myself in the third and final hall, I was thinking about 59 or so.”
