The Stanley Cup final has wrapped up, shifting NHL teams’ focus towards the offseason, with drafts and free agency approaching soon. The Toronto Maple Leafs secured a key player, John Tavares, by signing him to a four-year extension at $4.38 million annually. Tavares, 34, was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Former Chicago Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews is returning to the NHL, signing with his hometown Winnipeg Jets after two seasons away. Toews boasts an impressive career with 883 points across 1,067 regular-season games and brings three Stanley Cups and a Conn Smythe Trophy to the Jets.

NHL free agency officially begins on July 1st at noon ET, but teams are already working on adding players and making trades. Notable free agent prospects include Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner, Vancouver Canucks winger Brock Boeser, and Panthers defender Aaron Ekblad.

Sam Bennett, the 2025 Conn Smythe Trophy winner, pledged his future to the Florida Panthers with an eight-year, $64 million contract. Bennett was a dominant force in the Panthers’ back-to-back Stanley Cup wins, scoring 15 goals while excelling defensively.

The Maple Leafs announced the re-signing of John Tavares to a four-year deal worth $4.38 million per season, preserving a critical offensive piece despite likely losing star winger Mitch Marner. Tavares tallied 74 points last season and is expected to center Toronto’s second line in the upcoming season.

Jonathan Toews is making his NHL comeback with the Winnipeg Jets starting July 1st, after accumulating 883 points in his career and being a celebrated figure in Blackhawks history.

Dallas Stars also secured a four-year extension for veteran forward Matt Duchene, who led the team in scoring during the 2024-25 season with 82 points. Meanwhile, the Colorado Avalanche locked down Brock Nelson with a three-year contract after acquiring him at the trade deadline, where he also contributed significantly.

Fan Take: This wave of signings and re-signings highlights the strategic moves NHL teams are making to build strong, competitive rosters for the next season. For hockey fans, it means an exciting offseason filled with anticipation for new team dynamics and potential shifts in league power.
