Chet Holmgren might not always get the credit he deserves for the Oklahoma City Thunder’s success in their championship run. Usually, the attention goes to standout players like MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, second star Jalen Williams, or Alex Caruso.

However, NBA legend Paul Pierce recently praised Holmgren, drawing a significant comparison between him and Chicago Bulls great Scottie Pippen. Pierce emphasized Holmgren’s unique and versatile impact on the Thunder, similar to how Pippen complemented the Bulls’ dynasty by playing a crucial, supportive role that doesn’t always seek the spotlight.

The Celtics icon explained that Holmgren’s contributions mirror Pippen’s influence on winning teams—both are players who excel at fulfilling various needs for their team with high basketball IQ and selfless play. Pierce pointed out that the Thunder, much like the Bulls, have strong foundational players—two All-Stars on rookie contracts—while Holmgren, who is expected to become an All-Star, plays a vital role.

Pierce highlighted Holmgren’s well-rounded skill set and understanding of his role, noting that he does a bit of everything for the team, especially on defense and in intangible ways. He predicts Holmgren’s stats will significantly improve if he steps up as Oklahoma City’s clear second option. Last season, as the third option, Holmgren averaged 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game.

Holmgren showed clear progress from his rookie season and set an NBA Finals record with five total blocks in the championship series. Former player JR Smith has even likened Holmgren’s potential threat to that of Kevin Durant, recognizing Holmgren’s rare combination of size and skill, though their roles differ.

Despite the high praise, concerns about Holmgren’s durability remain after he played only 32 regular-season games last year. His health will be a major factor in whether he can reach the ceiling of greatness similar to Pippen or Durant, as envisioned by NBA legends.

Fan Take: This recognition of Chet Holmgren’s impact is a game-changer for how role players are valued in championship teams. If Holmgren continues to develop and stay healthy, he could redefine the archetype of a versatile big man who elevates his team’s success beyond traditional stars, shaping the future of basketball strategy.
