Wimbledon 2025: ONS Jabeur appears to be in tears before retiring in the first round due to injury

Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur has a history of success at Wimbledon. Yabul reached the finals in 2022 and 2023 consecutive times, but never won the event. She hasn’t won everything yet, but Wimbledon is her strongest Grand Slam.

However, in 2025, Yabul didn’t accomplish that from the first round.

The 30-year-old was forced to retire due to an injury during his first round match against Viktoriya Tomova on Monday. Javert appeared to shed tears before calling to retire from the game.

Jabeur required a doctor’s appointment in the first set vs. Tomova. After just 26 minutes of play, Yabour had to temporarily leave the court and buried her head in a towel after returning.

After being checked out, Yabour returned to action and lost his first set 7-5. Javert stayed in court to try the second set, but was delayed 2-0 before retiring from the contest.

After the match, Yabour said there was strong practices leading up to Wimbledon, and according to the Associated Press, it was sad that the event would need to depart early.

“I didn’t think I was feeling good. I’ve been practicing pretty well over the last few days, but I think these things will happen,” Yabour said afterwards. “I’m pretty sad. Even though it’s been a very tough season for me, it doesn’t really help my confidence and keeps pushing myself. I hope I feel better.”

The Yabour exit marks an even more disappointing development for Tunisians who have been suffering from injuries since 2024. Javert was forced to retire from the 2024 US Open due to a shoulder injury and decided to shorten the season due to issues.

She returned to action at the Australian Open in 2025, losing in the third round. Javert also fought a leg injury at the Miami Open in March.

These injuries, and Yabour’s struggle since returning home, dropped her to No. 59 in the WTA rankings. This is a significant drop for Yabour, who ranked second in 2022 overall.
