Greatness often runs in families, with many athletes following in their fathers’ footsteps to carve out their own legacies, especially in North America’s major sports leagues. A historic moment occurred when LeBron James and his son Bronnie played together for the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2024-25 NBA season, marking the first father-son duo to share the court in NBA history. LeBron, widely regarded as one of the all-time greats with four NBA championships, four MVP awards, and being the league’s top scorer, expressed the unique joy of playing alongside his son, highlighting that while titles are significant, the opportunity to compete with Bronnie means even more.

Looking back at the greatest father-son duos in sports history, one standout is the Long family in the NFL. The father earned a Hall of Fame career as a top defensive lineman with the Raiders, making eight Pro Bowls and winning Super Bowl XVIII. His son Chris also had a distinguished NFL career, winning Super Bowl titles with the Patriots and Eagles and becoming part of the first father-son pair to win a Super Bowl. Another son, Kyle, excelled as a Pro Bowl guard in the NFL, primarily with the Chicago Bears.

In Major League Baseball, Cecil and Prince Fielder are one of the most powerful hitting father-son pairs. Cecil was a three-time All-Star who led the American League in RBIs three years running and won a World Series with the Yankees. His son Prince matched his power, hitting 50 home runs in a season and helping the Tigers win the 2012 World Series, becoming the first father-son duo with 40+ homers in a season.

In the NBA, the duo of Klay and Mychal Thompson made significant impacts. Mychal contributed to the Lakers’ 1980s dynasty with two titles, while Klay formed half of the “Splash Brothers,” winning four championships with the Warriors. Likewise, Del Curry and Steph Curry have left their marks, with Steph revolutionizing the game through his unmatched three-point shooting, earning two MVP awards, and leading Golden State to multiple titles.

In NASCAR, Dale Earnhardt Sr. was an iconic driver with 76 wins before his tragic death in 2001. His son, Dale Earnhardt Jr., also achieved great success with 26 wins, including two Daytona 500 victories, and was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Other legendary baseball father-son duos include Bobby and Barry Bonds, with Barry setting the all-time home run record, and Vladimir Guerrero Sr. and Jr., both All-Stars with powerful hitting reputations. Hockey’s legendary Hull family featured Bobby and Brett Hull, both Hall of Famers with impressive goal-scoring records and Stanley Cup victories.

In baseball, Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. made history as the first father-son duo to play together in the majors, with Griffey Jr. being one of the greatest players ever. Lastly, the Manning family stands out in NFL history for producing not just one but three elite quarterbacks, with Archie Manning and his sons Peyton and Eli each leaving unforgettable legacies, and the next generation poised to continue the tradition.

Honorable mentions include families like the Sanders, Rivers, Bryants, Matthews, McCaffreys, Harrisons, Schmeichels, Hardaways, Waltons, Matthews, Pettys, Hills, and the James family.
