Nick Kyrgios is set to open French return on doubles duty

Nick Kyrgios will be playing in the doubles tournament for the first time since 2017 with Australia’s Jordan Thompson.

The 30-year-old spent a passionate time with foot, knee and wrist injuries following his surprise run at the 2022 Wimbledon Finals, playing only four singles matches this year, winning one at the Miami Open in March.

Kyrgios was not expected to compete in Paris’ Clay, who played for the Roland Garros in his second loss eight years ago, but said Thompson’s regular doubles partner Max Purcell changed his mind when he was able to fulfill the doping ban.

“The French Open wasn’t actually on the cards,” Kyrgios told the Canberra Times. “But after that with Max Purcell, Jordan was looking for a partner, so he asked me if I wanted to play.

“We’ve played at the French Open before, so it’s good to go out there and play with another fellow Australian and have a bit of fun.”

Kyrgios, his natural talent and non-apologetic personality, was a big draw on the court of the Grand Slam, and landed him in past controversies.

While the Grand Slam Singles title escaped him, Kyrgios won the 2022 doubles crown with Australian open countryman Tanashi Kokkinakis.

Despite question marks about his long-term future in the game, Kyrgios is expected to resume his singles career during a herbivorous swing before Wimbledon next month.

The French opening will begin on May 25th.
