TGL Golf adds Detroit as the seventh expansion city of the 2027 season

TGL Golf is adding its seventh team to the 2027 season representing Detroit, the technology-infused golf league announced on Tuesday.

Motor City Golf will be jointly owned by Steve Hamp and Sheilaford Hamp, the leading owners and chairs of the Detroit Lions. Michael Hamp, Peter Hamp and Kevin Kelleher will lead the franchise.

Denver Broncos owner Rob Walton and attorney Jordan Rose are also part of the ownership group.

“This is a great moment for Detroit Sports and a moment that I personally feel proud of,” said Michael Hamp, co-owner of Middle West Partners and the new Team Governor of Motor City Golf Club.

“My grandfather, William Clay Ford Sr., was an avid golfer. I think he’ll be really proud of him to bring a new form of the game he loved. I’m very grateful to my partner at MCGC. The Detroit fans are the most loyal in the sport and are excited to represent TGL.

In its first season, the TGL had six teams representing Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco/Oakland and Jupiter, Florida. The team consisted of four golfers, with three players competing at Sophie Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

It is unclear whether TGL will expand before the second season, which is scheduled to begin in January 2026.

In April, The Associated Press reported that the group was planning to bid for the TGL franchise in Dallas at a price tag of $77 million.

TGL is also looking at matching with Tiger Woods and Lori McIlroy in front of them, and LPGA stars are also involved.

“Detroit is a great sports town,” Mike McCurley, CEO of TGL and TMRW Sports, said in a statement. “The city has a championship legacy, and Detroit fans are passionate about their teams, and they will let you know that.

“The Motor City Golf Club Ownership Group will leverage its deep connections with the community and leverage its extensive expertise as an owner of NFL teams to build a TGL team that embodies Detroit’s culture for its love of sport and local golf.”
