WNBA M’VP A’ja Wilson retired from No. 22 jersey at his alma mater in South Carolina and retired to the territory of colonial life that was sold out this Sunday. The event took place when the current team faced off against Auburn.
As the most decorated gamecock basketball player of all time, Wilson was overwhelmed by emotion to say the least.
“The place where my dream began to retire my jersey at the University of South Carolina is an honor that I barely can speak for.”
A’ja Wilson attended the University of South Carolina from 2014 to 2018, winning four straight SEC tournament championships, a sturdy award of three seconds, and leading the school in both points and blocks among countless other accolades.
She also shared her gratitude for the Columbia community. “It’s a privilege to be a gamecock and be part of this community. One of the greatest honors of my life was representing Garnet and Black.”
Alongside A’ja, he was the only Dawn Staley, the Gamecocks head coach. Staley shared more about her relationship with A’Ja in an interview with WIS News in Columbia before the ceremony.
“Nothing is more proud than when A’ja gets her flowers. She’s the best, the best. No one is better than A’jaWilson and what she brings to the table.”
Thank you to both her parents, Her favorite Olympian is from outside of townMiami Heat Star Bum Adebayo, Wilson was visibly emotional, able to see her jersey unraveling with the rafters.
“When you look up at the rafters and look at the jersey, it reminds you of how important it is to pursue your dreams without fear.”
