Al Nassr is keen on renewing Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract but is encountering interest from other contenders for the Portuguese star, according to the club’s sporting director, Fernando Hierro, who spoke on Thursday.
This past Monday marked the conclusion of Saudi Arabia’s season, with the 40-year-old Ronaldo, along with Al Fateh, suggesting it might have been his last match.
During a press conference, Hierro stated, “Ronaldo’s contract with Al Nassr is valid until June 30th. We aim to extend his stay and hope he continues with us.”
“We are in talks with Cristiano regarding a contract renewal. Hopefully, we can reach an agreement,” he added.
Ronaldo was the top scorer in Saudi Arabia, leading in goals for the second consecutive season, finishing last season with a record-breaking 35 goals in the Saudi professional league during his first full term at Al Nassr.
Recent reports indicate that Ronaldo has received an enticing proposal from an unnamed Brazilian club while he has confirmed his intent to participate in the upcoming Club World Cup.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner joined Al Nassr in December 2022 after leaving Manchester United.
“From the start, Ronaldo’s presence has been a national project,” Hierro remarked. “Cristiano has brought global attention to football in this country. It’s remarkable how he bravely arrived here, contributed, and showcased the Saudi league. This is a significant achievement.”
“His arrival has attracted high-caliber players, opening doors in the industry. The top officials are doing exceptional work, and we will be in touch for his contract renewal, hoping he stays with us,” he continued.
Despite netting 99 goals across 105 matches for Al Nassr, Ronaldo missed out on major trophies, winning the Arab Club Champions Cup only after joining in 2023.
This season he scored 25 league goals, yet Al Nassr disappointingly finished in third place, missing a spot in next season’s prestigious AFC Champions League.
Ronaldo is set to join the Portuguese national team for the UEFA Nations League finals next week.
Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer enthusiasts as Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence in the Saudi league has elevated its profile globally. His potential departure or contract renewal will impact both the competitive landscape of local leagues and Ronaldo’s continuing legacy in world football.
