MLB Boosts Unlimited Softball Leagues to Empower Athletes Ahead of Upcoming Season

Major League Baseball (MLB) is making a strategic investment in Athletes Unlimited, a women’s professional softball league set to launch next month. This marks MLB’s first major partnership with a women’s professional sports league. The investment, which exceeds 20%, aims to enhance the league’s visibility and support through marketing, sales, events, content creation, digital and social media platforms. MLB plans to promote the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) during high-profile events like the MLB All-Star Game and postseason.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting a thorough study of the opportunity and expressing optimism about the league’s potential stability, comparable to the WNBA. Athletes Unlimited, known for its innovative individual champion format since 2020 in softball, will debut a traditional team-based league on June 7, while still keeping the individual All-Star Cup format.

Manfred noted the rising interest in women’s sports and said MLB sought to engage with that market, deciding that partnering with Athletes Unlimited, which has strong infrastructure and success, was better than starting a new league from scratch. Former MLB executive Kim Ng, the first female GM in a major U.S. professional sports league, was appointed AUSL commissioner, bolstering confidence in the investment.

Athletes Unlimited co-founder Jon Patricof emphasized that MLB’s backing extends beyond finances, aiming to boost the league’s exposure to new audiences—a critical challenge for any sports league. The league features notable softball greats as advisors and will run a 24-game season across 12 cities, with plans to expand to six city-based teams next season.

MLB already supports various women’s softball and baseball initiatives and is watching the upcoming launch of the first women’s professional baseball league in 2026. Manfred is optimistic about AUSL’s future, expecting it to grow sustainably and help expand diamond sports globally.

Patricof praised MLB’s official support as a game-changer for professional softball, saying it brings new energy and legitimacy to the sport, encouraging greater interest and investment.

Fan Take: This is a groundbreaking moment for baseball fans, as MLB’s involvement in women’s professional softball signals a major shift towards gender inclusivity and growth in the sport. Supporting the AUSL not only elevates women’s softball but also enriches the overall baseball community by expanding the game’s reach and inspiring future generations of athletes.
