Paige Bueckers Embraces Early Challenges in WNBA Debut, Asking: “How Can I Improve Every Day?”

Chicago – Just six games into her pro career, No. 1 overall pick Paige Bueckers is still adjusting to the WNBA lifestyle. She’s navigating increased media attention, new teammates, coaches, and a fresh home city, yet she remains comfortable on the court.

After a slow start Thursday night, Bueckers put up 15 points and eight assists, though her Dallas Wings fell 97-92 to the Chicago Sky in a hard-fought game. The final moments resembled a boxing match, with both squads exchanging leads and clutch shots. Chicago’s Camila Cardoso secured a crucial rebound, helping the Sky claim their first win of the season.

This matchup offers valuable lessons for the Wings heading into their rematch in Texas this Saturday. “The good thing is we get to face them again quickly,” said Dallas coach Chris Cochrane. “We can make adjustments and respond. We did many things well and thought we earned the win. It’s not ideal to lose, but there are plenty of positives to build on.”

Bueckers and the Wings are still defining their identity early on. After a disappointing 9-31 season in 2024, the team hired veteran GM Curt Miller and head coach Koclanes. With the top pick in the 2025 draft, selecting Bueckers was an easy choice.

Bueckers led UConn to the NCAA title on April 6, was drafted April 14, and started camp weeks later. She’s learning from teammates as they get to know her. “With every practice and game, she’s becoming quicker with reads and more comfortable,” said coach Koclanes. “Her game is smoother and more confident each day.”

The WNBA season is fast-paced with many games, and Bueckers is learning to improve instantly. “I’m reflecting, learning, and focused on moving forward step by step,” she said. “I’m trying to be the best teammate and leader daily. We have lots to grow, and we’re hungry to get better.”

Her progress is clear: scoring 10 points in her debut, then 19 the next game, and posting her first double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) in game three. In the Wings’ first win, a 109-87 victory over the Sun, Bueckers scored 21 points. She’s always looking for ways to improve. “Every game challenges you differently, and I’m proud to be prepared,” she added.

Being a pro means more than just on-court performance. Bueckers’ stellar college career has earned her fans nationwide, including Chicago, where many wore her jerseys and waved a pink flag resembling one she uses. She drew a media swarm before the game, and hundreds greeted the Wings after, showing the pressures she faces at 22, barely two months out of college. Despite this, Bueckers keeps grounded. “I feel blessed and want to give back what I’ve received. It’s better to share than to keep it all to myself,” she said. “I sat in the stands looking up at idols and now aim to be a role model who uses this platform to help make the world better.”

Fan Take: Paige Bueckers’ rapid adjustment and rising impact are exciting for WNBA fans, signaling the arrival of a new star who can elevate the league’s competitiveness and visibility. Her growth story highlights the league’s dynamic future and the increasing talent shaping women’s professional basketball.
