Shannon Sharp Predicts La Lakers’ Sole ‘Valuable’ Trade Asset to Depart with $200 Million Soon

Shannon Sharpe has expressed concerns that the Los Angeles Lakers might soon lose one of their crucial players and key assets. After the Lakers were eliminated in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves, it became evident that some major changes are needed for the team, which still carries a championship-caliber roster. Rob Pelinka has emphasized that the offseason goal is to make significant additions, but the Lakers currently lack the valuable assets required to make trades for top-tier players.

Austin Reaves, who has steadily improved each year since entering the NBA, is now averaging 20 points per game this season and has broken several Lakers records with his performances. However, Sharpe worries the Lakers might lose Reaves due to his contract situation. Though Reaves signed a four-year, $54 million deal despite potential for a bigger payday elsewhere, after proving himself as a reliable player, the team might need to test his loyalty with an even bigger offer. Sharpe believes that given the chance to earn a massive contract, Reaves, who is only 27, will likely choose a team that can pay him more, as the Lakers might not be able to meet his financial demands.

Reaves averaged 20 points and 5.8 assists during the regular season, but Sharpe doubts that the Lakers can win a championship with the current combination of LeBron James, Luka Dončić, and Reaves. He adds that while the Lakers may not have to trade Reaves, they need a big move because he is their most valuable asset. Undrafted when he entered the league, Reaves has improved in every aspect and is one of the few tradeable pieces the Lakers hold. The team reportedly would only consider trading him if they can bring in a significant player in return.

Reaves’ initial contract extension helped the Lakers sign another free agent, but it’s unlikely he would agree to another team-friendly deal. He shares a strong bond with LeBron James and has exceeded expectations throughout his time in LA. With potential trade targets like Naz Reid and Nikola Vučević, the Lakers might be tempted to trade Reaves to boost the roster.

Fan Take: This development is significant for basketball fans because losing a rising star like Austin Reaves could leave a big hole in the Lakers’ future plans. It highlights the tough balancing act teams face between keeping promising young talent and building a championship-worthy roster, a dynamic that shapes the landscape of the NBA every season.
