Odell Beckham Jr. Opens Up: “I Never Said I Wanted to Quit the Giants, Just Needed Space to Chase a Super Bowl in New York”

Odell Beckham Jr. and New York Giants supporters were both saddened by his departure. In a 2019 interview on Paramount Plus during the final Champions League broadcast, Beckham Jr. shared his frustration about being traded to the Cleveland Browns that year. Since entering the NFL in 2014, OBJ has played for five different teams. He spent five seasons with the Giants after being selected in the first round, and while fans were upset to see him go in 2019, Beckham Jr. was even more disappointed.

“I didn’t want to leave the New York Giants,” Beckham Jr. expressed. “I spoke out because if we lose just one game in college, our whole season is over. This organization drafted me and believed in me. If the Giants had won the Super Bowl, I would have been happy, but I definitely wanted to be a part of that.”

Only seven months after signing a five-year, $90 million contract extension with the Giants, Beckham was traded to Cleveland. Since then, the three-time Pro Bowler has won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. In December, he and the Miami Dolphins mutually agreed to part ways.

Fan Take: Beckham’s journey highlights the volatility in player-team relationships in today’s NFL, underscoring how quickly dynamics can change even for star players. This story is a reminder of the business side of football, but also of the passion and loyalty athletes carry, which resonates deeply with fans.
