It’s that time again: with the conclusion of the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League final, we present the FC 100.
The FC 100 stands apart from typical rankings. This isn’t a simple 1-100 list; we assess all key positions on the field. While most rankings tend to favor goal scorers and playmakers, our approach gives equal importance to various roles that often don’t receive due recognition.
This year, our rankings feature seven distinct categories, allowing readers to see a “depth chart” for each position in global soccer. In response to the evolving nature of the game, we’ve divided defenders into wide and central categories and created two sections for midfielders (defensive and attacking) while also clearly distinguishing between wing and center forwards.

Examining which long-standing ESPN FC 100 players may miss out this year
Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, and Jan Oblak have been included in all nine editions of the FC 100—will they make it to the tenth?
New Changes for 2025
This year’s selection process involved nearly 100 contributors from across ESPN—reporters, editors, producers, and on-air talent all pitched in. Notable voters included writers like Gab Marcotti and Julien Lawrence, along with former players such as Don Hutchison and Alejandro Moreno, all providing their insights from different regions of the ESPN family.
Recognizing the multifaceted roles of fullbacks and wingers in modern soccer, we’ve revised our categorization accordingly. The midfield division now distinguishes between defensive/holding midfielders, who disrupt opponents, and playmakers who deliver critical passes.
The list is categorized into seven sections: Goalkeeper, Fullback, Center Back, Defensive Midfielder, Attacking Midfielder, Winger, and Center Forward. This structure ensures attention is given to all crucial positions on the pitch, allowing a more nuanced evaluation of emerging talent.

How the Voting Process Worked
Identifying the world’s top players is no small task, and our voters had guidelines to assist in their selections. They were asked to consider: Who is currently the best player? Should the 2024-25 season be prioritized? Variables like injuries were factored in, but overall contributions during healthy periods were given significant weight. Individual performances in tournaments like the Champions League were considered, but they didn’t dominate the rankings, emphasizing the importance of consistent performance over time.
