William Byron Secures Runner-Up Spot at Daytona 500 Following Dramatic Final Crash

William Byron clinched his second consecutive Daytona 500 victory after a last-lap accident took out the race leader, Denny Hamlin, on the backstretch. Byron capitalized on the chaos, taking the lead when Hamlin spun after overtaking Austin Sindrick during the final lap of the Green-White-Checkered restart.

Byron, who was ninth at the white flag, managed to weave through traffic, moving toward the center and edging out Hendrick Motorsports teammate Alex Bowman. When Hamlin and others crashed, Byron narrowly avoided the wreck near the wall and bumped Tyler Reddick to cross the finish line first.

Reflecting on the win, Byron credited his instincts for keeping him clear of disaster, noting that the pack was spreading across multiple lanes on the backstretch. NASCAR, however, appeared to overlook the final lap incident, which contrasted sharply with the previous day’s Xfinity Series race where race control immediately responded to a crash on the last lap. Though a caution flag wouldn’t have changed the outcome, the inconsistency was noted by viewers.

This victory marked Hendrick Motorsports’ 10th Daytona 500 win, with Byron placing ninth for the team in the 2024 season. The race extended to 203 laps, three beyond the scheduled length.

Hamlin was aiming for his fourth Daytona 500 title, which would have tied him with Kale Yarbrough and trailed only Richard Petty’s record seven wins. Hamlin admitted they underestimated the early front-straight spin and encountered a challenging situation trying to overtake Cindric, while also dealing with Cole Custer’s aggressive move late in the race.

The dramatic final was shaped by a crash involving Christopher Bell and Cole Custer with fewer than five laps remaining. Bell crashed heavily into the wall, and Ryan Preece’s car flipped after contact before smashing into the barrier. This incident, alongside a 15-lap crash pile-up involving multiple contenders like Joey Logano and Kyle Busch, severely shook up the race dynamics.

Austin Sindrick led the most laps (59), with Logano and Branny also showing strong performances, but none secured the win. Logano, who possibly had the fastest car, fell behind during the second stage due to engine troubles caused by debris but returned to the race after repairs.

The event experienced a lengthy rain delay shortly after the green flag, pushing the finish well past the original schedule. This marked the fourth time in six years that the Daytona 500 was weather-delayed, with some previous races concluding on Mondays or late Sunday nights.
