Canadiens Eye Kashawn Aitcheson as a Promising First-Round Prospect

As the draft draws near and speculation intensifies about potential picks, we explore some intriguing prospects for the Montreal Canadiens. Today, we focus on Kashaun Aitcheson.

Standing at a solid 6-foot-1 and weighing 198 pounds, Aitcheson is a left-shooting defenseman who brings a physical edge that the Canadiens’ current defense lacks. While Arber Xhekaj offers physicality, it’s still uncertain if he’ll secure a permanent spot on the roster moving forward.

According to Marco D’Amico of RG.org, Aitcheson is among the players the Canadiens are considering for the draft. This season, he notched an impressive 59 points in 64 games with the OHL’s Barrie Colts and added 12 points over 16 playoff games. His 2023-24 production reflects a 20-point increase from before, highlighting his growing ability to manage physical play and understand game boundaries—an impressive skill for an 18-year-old. This development is significant, especially since it’s an area where Xhekaj has faced challenges establishing himself under coach Martin St-Louis.

Despite his offensive talents, Aitcheson excels defensively with a tough, punishing style reminiscent of the approach former GM Mark Bergevin appreciated in defenders. Pairing his grit and playmaking with a more mobile defenseman could be a winning combination for the team.

D’Amico also notes that the Canadiens have scouted Aitcheson this year, and he is represented by Quartexx Management, co-founded by GM Kent Hughes before he joined Montreal. Currently, Aitcheson ranks 9th in Central Scouting’s North American Skaters list, while TSN’s Bob McKenzie places him 18th, Craig Button 16th, Ryan Kennedy 12th, and Tony Ferrari much lower at 42nd, underscoring the different perspectives in scouting.

For Canadiens fans and hockey enthusiasts, Kashaun Aitcheson represents a compelling blend of skill and toughness that could redefine Montreal’s defensive identity. This draft pick could signal a shift toward a more physical yet dynamic style of play, showing how the sport continually evolves with talented young players at the forefront.
