Knicks Eyeing Another Shot: Reportedly Pursued Kevin Durant Trade This Season, May Rekindle Talks in Offseason Shuffle

The New York Knicks are exploring options to replace their dismissed head coach Tom Thibodeau, while also focusing on strengthening their roster. Many fans and analysts are speculating about a potential trade between the Knicks and the Phoenix Suns involving Kevin Durant, a move New York had considered in previous seasons, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Charania revealed on Thursday’s "Today’s NBA" that there was mutual interest in a trade of Durant around the trade deadline, with the Knicks making an offer, but ultimately, no trade materialized. The Suns, under new GM Brian Gregory and head coach Jordan Ott, will likely need to offload Durant’s hefty $54.7 million salary next season to revamp their roster.

Durant, eager to compete for a championship, and the Knicks, looking to add star power after a 51-win season and a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, seem like a natural fit. A potential trade might involve Karl-Anthony Towns, who is expected to earn $53.1 million next season and has a contract with player options totaling up to $118 million.

Similar logic applies to another potential target, Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Milwaukee Bucks might consider trading stars to refresh their lineup, with Antetokounmpo’s salary at $54.1 million next season and a player option amounting to $121.2 million. Charania also noted that the Knicks need to build more depth. Having traded away five first-round picks to acquire Jalen Brunson, they must rely on existing roster depth to make deals, a challenge the Suns faced after signing Durant and Bradley Beal.

While ESPN insiders didn’t disclose the specifics of the Knicks’ offer to Phoenix for Durant, the Suns reportedly pursued a trade with the Golden State Warriors before the deadline, but Durant declined a return to his former team.

Fan Take: This potential Durant trade could shake up the NBA landscape and provide fans with thrilling new rivalries and storylines. For basketball lovers, it signals a high-stakes effort by teams like the Knicks and Suns to build championship-contending squads, highlighting how player movement continues to redefine the sport’s competitive balance.
