Aaron Rodgers Strikes Deal with Steelers, Ending Months of Free Agency Anticipation

After months of weighing his options, Aaron Rodgers has finally decided on his next team. The 41-year-old quarterback has signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Reports from Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer and NFL Media reveal that Rodgers will travel to Pittsburgh on Friday to finalize the deal just before the team’s mandatory minicamp begins next week.

Initially, the Steelers were confident that Rodgers would sign with them and were prepared to accommodate his personal needs during the transition. Earlier this year, the New York Jets announced in February that they were moving on from Rodgers after a two-year tenure, officially releasing him in June. Since then, Rodgers kept a low profile about his next move, stating in April that he was open to all possibilities.

The Steelers met with Rodgers in March and kept communication open, ultimately securing his commitment a few months later. Multiple teams showed interest in Rodgers this offseason, including the New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings, and rumors suggested the Los Angeles Rams also considered him before re-signing Matthew Stafford.

Rodgers will now join a consistent playoff-contending Steelers team led by coach Mike Tomlin, a team that has struggled with stable quarterback performance in recent years. Last season, Pittsburgh revamped their quarterback lineup with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Both had strong moments, but Wilson’s performance declined towards the end, contributing to a wildcard-round playoff exit.

This offseason saw another major change in Pittsburgh’s quarterback roster: Wilson moved to the Giants and Fields joined the Jets. Before signing Rodgers, the Steelers added Mason Rudolph from free agency and drafted Ohio State’s Howard Wilson in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

In the 2023 season with the Jets, Rodgers threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, completing 63.0% of his passes with a 90.5 passer rating, though his season ended early due to a torn Achilles. A Super Bowl XLV MVP, Rodgers is also a four-time All-Pro and a ten-time Pro Bowler, having spent his first 18 NFL seasons primarily with the Green Bay Packers from 2008 to 2022.

Fan Take: Aaron Rodgers joining the Steelers is a game-changer for both the team and the league. His veteran leadership and proven track record could revitalize Pittsburgh’s offense and reignite excitement for NFL fans eager to see a new chapter in Rodgers’ storied career unfold.
