Frank Lagnow’s retirement prompts reflection on NFL players who have significantly contributed to their team’s success, particularly those not initially recognized for their impact. Centers in football play a crucial role during attacks, akin to key defensive positions in baseball, with their mental responsibilities ranging from pre-snap communication to making quick adjustments. The importance of the center, often described as the ‘spine’ of a unit, extends across various sports, and in the NFL, less spotlighted yet vital MVPs in central roles deserve recognition.

Zach Fraser, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ center, is an example of a rising star. Despite being only in his second year and battling injuries, Fraser has demonstrated high football IQ and excellent pre-snap leadership. He recorded one of the lowest pressure rates allowed among centers last season. With new quarterback Aaron Rodgers on the team, Fraser’s mental command of the offensive line remains crucial, especially as Rodgers adapts to his role. Fraser is also noted for his athletic ability and strong second-level blocking, suggesting a promising future ahead.

Outside the center position, young offensive linemen like Arizona’s Paris Johnson Jr. and Seattle’s Charles Cross show potential for breakout years, helped by solid coaching and team support. Both have steadily improved, showing promise in both pass protection and run blocking.

Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair of the Houston Texans is another standout. His presence on the field significantly improves the Texans’ defensive performance, reducing both explosive plays and yards allowed per run. Despite missing games due to injury, his influence on the linebackers’ coverage and the overall defensive scheme is evident. His ability to read plays and cover ground makes him a key player for Houston’s defense.

Defensive tackle Teair Tart, who joined the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024 after a turbulent period with Tennessee, has proven indispensable. On the field, the Chargers’ defense performs substantially better, especially against the run, allowing fewer yards per carry and reducing the success rate of opposing offenses. Tart’s exceptional play has earned him a new contract and a vital role in strengthening the Chargers’ defense under Jesse Minter.

DeMordore Lenoir, a versatile defensive back for the San Francisco 49ers, has also emerged as a top performer. Known for his strong slot defense and ability to cover receivers effectively, Lenoir posted impressive tackle and pass defense stats in 2024. His contribution helps balance the 49ers’ defensive efforts alongside established stars like linebacker Fred Warner. As the 49ers look to bolster their front seven, Lenoir remains a crucial part of their evolving defensive strategy.

Other promising young defenders in the league include Philadelphia’s Nickle Cooper Dejean, Detroit’s Brian Branch, and Baltimore’s Kyle Hamilton and Marlon Humphrey, alongside veterans like Mike Hilton and Taron Johnson. Garrett Williams of the Arizona Cardinals is also gaining recognition for his consistent playmaking abilities, complementing defensive stalwart Budda Baker.

Fan Take: These insights shed light on the often overlooked yet essential players who form the backbone of NFL teams. Recognizing their impact changes how fans appreciate the nuances of team success, highlighting that football greatness isn’t just about star quarterbacks but also about the mental and physical leadership from less celebrated positions. This perspective could signal a shift in how talent is valued and developed across the league.
