Kasperi Kapanen Reflects on Intense Maple Leafs Media Scrutiny While Shining Bright with the Oilers

Edmonton Oilers forward Kasperi Kapanen, who previously played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, is currently competing fiercely in the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs. Ahead of the Stanley Cup final, he shared his thoughts on his time in Toronto, pointing out the intense media scrutiny there which, while challenging, prepares players for their future. Kapanen noted that although he was accustomed to Canadian media from his time in Edmonton, the media pressure in Toronto is on a completely different level.

Kapanen’s tenure with the Maple Leafs was marked by high expectations, being the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft and a significant piece in the Leafs’ trade involving Phil Kessel. He had a breakout season in 2018-19 with 20 goals and 24 assists over 78 games and had already made a playoff overtime impact with Washington Capitals in 2017. However, after that season, his performance declined and he faced disciplinary issues including being benched for sleeping in and tardiness to practice. He was traded back to Pittsburgh in 2020, partly to manage his salary.

In the following seasons, questions about Kapanen’s defensive skills and reliability surfaced. His struggles culminated in a February 2023 exemption and later that year, he was convicted of aggravated DUI in Finland, openly discussing his alcohol struggles. Despite these challenges, the St. Louis Blues re-signed him to a one-year deal, though he continued to face career hurdles. Eventually, the Edmonton Oilers claimed him, and he played a crucial role in their playoff run, including scoring an overtime clinching goal against the Vegas Golden Knights in Round 2.

This playoff performance was Kapanen’s critical opportunity to prove he still belonged in the NHL, showing that he could contribute consistently to the team’s success. Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs continue to invest in promising talent, inviting London Knights goaltender Austin Elliott to training camp and advancing prospect Easton Cowan, demonstrating their commitment to future success. The team has also bolstered its coaching staff by hiring Dere Clarondo as an assistant coach, filling the vacancy left by Lane Lambert who joined the Seattle Kraken as head coach.

Fan Take: Kasperi Kapanen’s journey highlights the pressures and challenges NHL players face both on and off the ice, underscoring the importance of resilience and support systems in professional hockey. For fans, his comeback story adds a layer of drama and inspiration to the playoffs, reminding us that talent combined with determination can lead to redemption and success in the sport.
