Uncertainty Looms Over Golden Knights’ Alex Pie Trangelo Health Status for 2025-26 Season

The Vegas Golden Knights are entering an unusual offseason accompanied by speculation about significant roster changes and shifts in coaching strategies. However, veteran defenseman Alex Pietrangelo has raised concerns about his health. On Sportsnet’s Podcast 32, Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas revealed uncertainty surrounding Pietrangelo’s condition and worries that he might be unavailable for the 2025-26 season.

During the 2024-25 season, Pietrangelo faced several challenges, both health and injury-related. He missed some games, including a break due to illness late in the season. The 35-year-old appeared in 71 regular-season games, scoring four goals and tallying 33 points, and contributed two goals and six points in 10 playoff games.

Vegas head coach Bruce Cassidy stated he is not focusing on Pietrangelo’s injuries long-term and hopes for his return after a recent practice skating. Friedman noted that each year, rumors circulate about Pietrangelo’s declining health and inability to continue playing, yet he consistently returns and performs well.

Friedman also mentioned an NHL and international agreement regarding Olympic team selections, with a roster deadline likely around mid-June. Teams, including the Golden Knights, are currently evaluating their rosters and injury situations.

Though details about Pietrangelo’s condition remain unclear, the news is worrying. Pietrangelo is under contract for two more seasons, and while the team could place him on long-term injury reserve to free up salary cap space, they believe he is best suited to be on the ice.

The Golden Knights, eyeing top free agent Mitch Marner, may need to maneuver their salary cap by possibly trading players like Nicholas Hague and Ivan Barbashev. If Pietrangelo’s injury sidelines him for the season, it could create additional cap space, giving Vegas more flexibility in the market.

An injured Pietrangelo would be a significant setback for the team, but it could also open opportunities for emerging players like Kaedan Korczak to step up and prove themselves.

Fan Take: This situation with Pietrangelo is crucial for Golden Knights fans and the hockey community because it highlights the delicate balance between managing veteran players’ health and the team’s pursuit of championship success. How Vegas handles this challenge could set a precedent for other teams navigating aging stars and salary cap pressures in the NHL.
