Stuttgart, Germany — German 17-year-old Justin Engel has reached the quarter-finals of the ATP Tour Grass Court Tournament since Boris Becker 40 years ago, becoming the youngest player with the last eight in Stuttgart on Thursday.
Engel defeated US seventh seed Alex Michaelsen 6-4, 6-4 to become the youngest quarterfinalist in history in Stuttgart. He is the youngest man to reach the Grass Court event quarters since winning Wimbledon as a 17-year-old in 1985.
Engel, who turned 18 in October, will next face Canada’s Felix Auger Aliasimé on Friday.
It was an astounding 12 months for Engel. Engel broke into the top 800 in the rankings last July and acquired issue 1,344 in the 2024 season. He is currently guaranteed to move to the Top 250.
This week’s Engel has become the second youngest player after Rafael Nadal since 1990, winning matches on the tour on all three surfaces: grass, clay and hard court.
