Krejcikova saves match points again to survive in Eastbourne

Eastbourne, England — Wimbledon champion Barbora Klezikova saved match points for the second day in a row against British opponents to reach the quarterfinals of the Eastbourne WTA 250 event on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old Czech was plagued by thigh tension and served 5-6 in the deciding set, and was about to get knocked out by Jodi Barage when he defeated 0-40, but somehow managed to win 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3).

Second seed Crezikova, who defeated Italy’s Jasmine Paolini to win last year’s Wimbledon title, was leading in set and serve breaks, but needed treatment on her feet.

Ranked 164th in the world, Burrage played impressively to hit and break Krezikova’s serves to level the match.

The 26-year-old British was just ahead of the decider, but she couldn’t take one of the three match points that came her way, and the costly double fault on the tiebreak provided match points for Krejcikova, who didn’t make a mistake.

Klezikova, who saved match points against home player Harriet Dirt on Tuesday, won his first double singles match in a 2025 injury.

“One more tough match,” Krejcikova, who has the crown of a French open single in her name, said in court.

“The British know how to play with grass, it’s difficult to play against them, but I’m happy.

“I was experiencing difficult moments earlier this year, and I’m happy to be here and continue to find the level I can reach.”
