The 2025 Club World Cup has reached its midpoint, with half of the 32 participating teams having been eliminated after two weeks. The other half is gearing up for the knockout stage, which kicks off this Saturday.

After some initial uncertainty, the rankings have almost returned to normal. Among the top 12 teams in the pre-tournament power rankings, 11 made it to the round of 16. Interestingly, all 13 teams advancing are from Europe or Brazil. My favorite, the team that clinched the Club World Cup title on June 14, remains at the top of my list.

However, there have been some surprises. Certain European clubs seem lackluster or fatigued, while challengers from other continents are emerging.

Below is the re-evaluation of the 16 remaining teams following the group stage. (The rankings prior to the tournament are mentioned in parentheses.)

1. Manchester City (4)

While Manchester City’s group stage adversaries weren’t exactly formidable, lingering issues from Pep Guardiola’s past season could resurface. Nevertheless, after investing over $400 million in new players, the club appears revitalized, especially after dominating Juventus following two distinctive starting lineups against Waidad and Al Ain.

This season has reignited hopes for City, who were early favorites when the tournament first took shape a year ago after facing rough patches.

2. PSG (1)

To the west, the reigning European champions seemed to be on track for their fourth title of 2025. However, they appear to be struggling slightly, as shown by close matches against Botafogo and Seattle Sounders, casting doubt on whether they can regain their Champions League form in the knockout rounds.

3. Real Madrid (2)

With new faces and minimal training, the Xabi Alonso Era started somewhat sluggishly. Yet, Real Madrid managed to find their rhythm by the third game, although they need star player Kylian Mbappé to return from illness to thrive further in the tournament.

4. Bayern Munich (3)

Bayern displayed sharp and structured play during their matches, showing particular strength against Boca Juniors and Benfica. Despite a commanding victory over Auckland, which ended 10-0, they’ve been consistently impressive throughout the group stage.

5. Flamengo (12)

Perhaps our assessment is based too heavily on a single match. They showcased their potential by defeating Chelsea 3-1 in Matchday 2, demonstrating depth and a loud fanbase. However, their path to the knockout stage is daunting, potentially facing Bayern, PSG, Real Madrid, and Manchester City all in a row.

6. Chelsea (6)

After their defeat to Flamengo, Chelsea bounced back, securing wins against Esperan Stunis. They caught a break in the knockout draw, as they face likely weaker opponents than Bayern and PSG.

7. Palmeiras (11)

Palmeiras might not be winning in style but has a solid and strategic approach with a capable manager. Their depth was evident in a comeback against Inter Miami, making them a formidable semi-final challenger.

8. Inter Milan (5)

Nerazzurri appears tired and not fully engaged in this tournament after a tumultuous 2024-25 season. Despite finishing at the top of Group E, it would be surprising to see them advance to the semi-finals.

9. Juventus (9)

Juventus struggled against Manchester City, facing challenges in earlier matches as well. Under Igor Tudor’s leadership, they are still a work in progress, with a Serie A title being more realistic than a Club World Cup win.

10. Benfica (10)

Benfica’s group stage was unpredictable, showcasing both struggles and moments of brilliance, including a surprising win against Bayern Munich. As they prepare to face Chelsea, it’s uncertain how they will perform.

11. Al Hilal (14)

The sole Saudi representative, Al Hilal, initially impressed against Real Madrid but may face challenges due to the tournament’s demands. Despite having star players, fatigue could impact their performance in the knockout stage.

12. Borussia Dortmund (7)

Dortmund encountered issues with the conditions and haven’t performed like title contenders, even securing a top place in Group F. Their play lacks the flair needed to make a deep run.

13. Botafogo (18)

Initially regarded as darlings of the tournament, Botafogo struggled against PSG yet advanced despite an unfavorable expected goal difference. Having previously faced Palmeiras successfully, they are hopeful for their rematch in the knockout stage.

14. Monterrey (16)

Monterrey’s solid performance in Group E has set the stage for a promising knockout round against Dortmund. Their focused approach has put them in contention.

15. Inter Miami (21)

Miami displayed some of their best football this year, managing draws against Porto and Palmeiras. While they’ve shown resilience, facing PSG will be a different challenge altogether.

16. Fluminense (22)

Fluminense surprised by defeating Dortmund early on, but subsequent performances indicate their inconsistency. They might slow Inter Milan in the knockout stage, but consistent success seems unlikely.

Fan Take: This news is particularly significant for soccer enthusiasts as it highlights the emergence of new talent and the unpredictability of top teams in the Club World Cup. The knockout stage promises thrilling matches, showcasing the evolving landscape of international football and potential upsets that could redefine team legacies.
