Ron Harper Claps Back at “Disrespectful” Remarks Targeting Dylan Harper and Kawhi Leonard with a Firm “Shut-Up”

After much anticipation, the San Antonio Spurs selected Dylan Harper with the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Harper, a standout at Rutgers, earned praise from none other than Stephen Curry ahead of the draft, affirming his undeniable talent.

Initially, the Spurs were rumored to be in the running for Kevin Durant but backed away after finding the Phoenix Suns’ asking price too steep. Consequently, they stayed committed to their plan and chose Harper.

During his sole season at Rutgers, Harper wore the #2 jersey, a number he will retain with the Spurs. However, this decision sparked controversy as the #2 was famously worn by NBA icon Kawhi Leonard during his time with the team. Fans quickly voiced their disapproval, with some criticizing Harper for taking the number.

The Spurs’ organization clearly supports Harper’s choice, even as fans grapple with the legacy of Leonard’s jersey. Harper’s father, Ron Harper, responded bluntly to critics on social media with a simple “Shut up.”

While the Spurs have every right to protect their new player, many fans were hoping Leonard’s #2 would be honored and retired. NBA reporter Michelle Beadle echoed the sentiment but noted that time has dulled the sting of Leonard’s departure, suggesting that respect for the number and player has evolved.

Leonard parted ways with the Spurs due to disputes over how the team handled his injuries. Despite his reserved nature, Leonard could not accept this, but it’s now been seven years since the split, and both parties seem to be moving on.

Fan Take: This news is significant for basketball fans because it highlights the complex emotions tied to jersey numbers and player legacies within a franchise. Dylan Harper’s debut wearing Leonard’s iconic number could signify a new chapter for the Spurs, balancing respect for the past while embracing future talent.
