In Louisville, Kentucky, 86-year-old trainer D. Wayne Lukas secured his fifth Kentucky Oaks win since 1990 when Secret Oath overtook favored Nest at Churchill Downs on Friday. Despite Nest’s efforts to maintain the lead set by Yujiri throughout the race, Secret Oath steadily advanced from mid-pack and surged down the rail to win. The Hall of Fame trainer’s last Oaks victory was in 1990 with Seaside Attractions, marking a significant return to top-tier victory with this freshman stakes win.

Ridden by Luis Saez, Secret Oath completed the 1 1/8 mile race in 1:49.44, earning her $767,250 and paying $10.80 to win. Nest finished second, with Desert Dawn taking third place. Churchill Downs welcomed full capacity crowds for the first time since 2019, marking a festive return for fans despite a brief rain delay. Many were eager to witness the showdown, especially with Nest, who had dominated previous races, aiming to extend trainer Todd Pletcher’s recent Oaks success.

Fans saw an intense duel as Nest closed in strongly in the final stretch but ultimately fell short to Secret Oath’s late surge.

Fan Take: This victory is a testament to the enduring skill of legendary trainer D. Wayne Lukas, proving that experience still triumphs in high-stakes racing. For horse racing enthusiasts, it highlights the excitement and unpredictability of the sport, reminding us why events like the Kentucky Oaks continue to captivate audiences year after year.
